The rare male bachelor (degree). The Washington Post is running a story on the decline in numbers of males receiving Bachelor's Degrees. As their graphic shows, of those receiving bachelor's degrees in 2000, only 43% were male. Although not a huge disproportion, it should be noted that this trend is projected to continue, and become worse. [kuro5hin.org]

I've been out of town and haven't kept up with my reading, but is this true? I'll stay off my soapbox for the time being, but I can hardly believe that people go so far with this stuff. Maybe I belong in a nice, cozy little mid-west town where God and family are still sacred. Maybe it's because I'm from such a town that I believe they are. Is it possible to take freedom too far? When the first Americans came here, they left a place that didn't agree with their beliefs. Can we ask anyone who doesn't agree with the original American beliefs to just go away? OK, I'm done now.

US Pledge of Allegiance Ruled Unconstitutional. Millions of American schoolchildren — including almost all adults who grew up in the US — have for two generations recited a daily pledge of allegiance in schools. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals today ruled that pledge to be a violation of the US Constitution. Social conservatives are outraged, liberals are smirking, and many of us are just stunned. Wi-Fi users take cue from hobos. In London, techies are “warchalking,” drawing a chalk symbol on a wall or pavement to indicate the presence of a wireless networking node–much like people once signaled each other about a good meal spot. [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]

From Mac to Windows and back. Back to Mac. Like so many folks who had to leave their Macs behind as they moved into the business world, Alan Graham found himself with three desktop PCs and a Toshiba laptop. They have since passed through eBay, and now Alan is a columnist for the Mac DevCenter. Here's how a Mac user got trapped in Windows, and escaped. On globalization, tactics, and the new football game. Love or hate it, football – or soccer for the Americans – is the biggest pro sport in the world. It has been practiced in almost every country for a long time, and has shown a remarkable stability in its rules since its creation as a sport, more than one century ago. If the rules are stable, the game itself is still evolving. Football is now a global sport. Players from all around the world play on the world's top leagues. The World Cup is now a truly global event, smaller only than the Olympic Games, which is also a remarkable achievement for a single sport. The globalization of football has led to big changes on the dynamic of the game, changes which have made the game that we watch today a different spectacle to watch than the one from a few decades ago. E-mail snooping rider on child porn bill. This week I was phone solicited by the Concerned Women for America to support HR 4623, which is supposed to be a more legally tight version of the 1996 virtual child pornography law that was struck down last month by the U.S. Supreme court for being too vague. I agreed to a $10 pledge, but after researching the issue I retracted. I discovered the provision 8(a)(2) that would allow the federal government to request copies of e-mail for any reason without a court order. [kuro5hin.org]
